I have loved and studied mushrooms since I was twelve. I helped collect specimens when my uncle was preparing for his mushroom inspector exam. That interest has stayed with me: I keep developing and expanding the site to make it accessible to everyone who enjoys mushrooms.
When I started in 2008, there were only a few similar sites to “compete” with. Today there are many excellent mushroom websites, from identification guides to scientific databases. My aim is a comprehensive portal covering as many aspects of mushrooms as possible: recognition, taxonomy, learning and field experience.
A fast identifier for larger species lists: the improvement enabling fast use with more than 500 species is also complete.
The next major tasks
These are my plans, not deadline commitments. Priorities may change: checking sources, writing content and development all take time.
Images and verified sources
I plan to replace or add five images for each of around 250 species: about 1,250 images, each with verified usage permissions, licensing and attribution.
Poisoning and nutrients
I plan to rewrite the mushroom poisoning section in Hungarian, English and German, and revise the material on vitamins and mushroom nutrients using verified sources.
Learning and exam preparation
The learning material outline is ready. Next, I want to add exercises and practice exam sections so readers can also check their knowledge.
Offline identifier
The basic offline identifier is ready. I want to develop it further to make it more useful in the field without an internet connection.
Species identification by genus
I plan to add dedicated pictogram species filters to the genus guide, for example for parasol mushrooms, brittlegills and waxcaps, eventually covering all twenty genera where possible.
A broader Hungarian species list
This requires expanding each genus to include species found in Hungary. I estimate the current coverage at around 25–30%; the target is a list of roughly 1,500 species. This is a substantial project with several stages.
Mushroom outlook: ongoing refinement
The calculator is working. I want to keep refining it using observations and field experience. This is an ongoing, long-term goal.
New languages
Alongside Hungarian, English and German, I would like to add Slavic languages and Spanish.
What does your support help with?
Contributions help with running the site, server costs and development. Checking images, writing species descriptions and preparing exercises take a lot of personal work. Your support helps me keep building this portal and keep it free to use.
Mushrooms grow with rain. Mushroom Portal, sadly, does not. 🍄
If you find the site useful, help it keep growing! Your support contributes to server costs, new mushroom descriptions and development.
The site will remain free. Support is voluntary — and greatly appreciated. Thank you!
About Me
I have loved mushrooms since childhood, and I have also been a programmer for a long time. Combining these two hobbies, I wrote this website. Previously, I had two other mushroom identification sites, which I sold. Only one of them remains accessible today. My goal with the current site is to create an easy-to-use search and identification platform that works great both in the field and at home. I hope it brings joy to others. Bartha László
