Chestnut Bolete

Gyroporus castaneus

edible marketable
  • Habitat: deciduous coniferous grassy
  • Fruiting season: June – October
  • Cap: hemispherical flat smooth velvety felty
  • Stem: cylindrical club-shaped hollow
  • Fertile layer: curved narrow

Description

Cap: 3-10 cm in diameter; hemispherical when young, convex, then flattening; red-, rust- or chestnut-brown, often lighter towards the margin; initially finely felty, becoming bare with age.

Tube layer: Narrow-pored, curved before the stem; whitish cream-colored, later yellowish.

Stem: 5-12 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm thick; cylindrical or slightly club-shaped; color and surface similar to the cap; with tiered cavities inside.

Flesh: Hard in the stem, brittle; whitish, color unchanged when cut; odorless, slightly nutty taste. Pleasant smell, slightly sourish with age.

Spore: Pale straw-yellow; 6-8(13) x 4-5(6) µm; smooth, elliptical, thin-walled.

Occurrence: From June to October, in deciduous forests, often occurring singly, not very common species. Also occurs in coniferous forests and open clearings.

Edibility: Edible, marketable.

Confusion: Cannot be confused with a poisonous species. Similar to the edible bay bolete. Widespread in Europe.

Note: gyrophorus comes from the Latin giro - around (like gyroscope), and phorus - pore, meaning circular pore. castaneus means chestnut, referring to its color, not its habitat.

Species description: In 1788, the French Jean Baptiste François Pierre Bulliard (1742-1792) described it scientifically for the first time. Previously it belonged to the Paxillaceae family, based on research, it now belongs to the Gyroporaceae family. The spore color differs from that of usual bolete mushrooms. The currently valid name is attributed to Quélet from 1886.
